Joseph Robinette Biden took oath as the new President of the United States last night at IST. Kamala Das Harris became the first woman to become the Vice President of the United States.
The oath taking ceremony was undertaken at Capitol Hill with no public in attendance to celebrate a new chapter in the world’s oldest democracy, instead there was a sea of flags to represent them. Nearly 25,000 national Guards troops were deployed to prevent any riot similar to that which occurred on 6th Jan this month at Capitol Hill.
The ceremony wasn’t attended by the former president, Donald Trump, a strange absence as it had not occurred in the last 150 years. Still, many high profile guests were in attendance like former presidents Barack Obama, George W Bush and Bill Clinton. Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton were also there.
Biden’s first day at office was focused to undo all the actions that his predecessor had taken. Some of his moves are to stop the construction of the US-Mexico border wall, rejoin the Paris climate agreement and the WHO.
India is also hopeful that Biden’s win will further improve relations between the two nations.
